An Introduction to Blizzard Internet Hosting

This document serves to introduce you to the often cryptic realm of website hosting. In the near future the Blizzard Hosting department will be contacting you in search of the information required to "move" your website from your past host's servers to our computers at Blizzard. While the process may seem highly complicated it is anything but. With your help we will be able to move your website with zero outage of your Internet presence.

Introduction.

Your website resides in a directory on a computer (server) connected to the Internet. There is a long number associated with that directory and server. This number is called the IP address (such as 10.152.62.58). Somewhere off in the Internet is a phone book of sorts that tells the entirety of the Internet where exactly to find that directory with your website. The phone book (or domain register) converts the IP address into something that people can make sense of. This sensible something is your URL or website address (such as www.blizzardinternet.com).

In order to "move" your website to the Blizzard servers we must place another copy of your website into a directory on our server and then change the information in the Internet phone book so that your website address points to our IP address instead of your old host's IP address. The change is very quick and only takes a few days to take effect across the entire Internet. Your website stays up during this time because your clients are either referred by a phone book that has Blizzard's or your old host's IP address. Either way, clients are seeing a copy of your website because both directories exist.

Your email will likely be interrupted for a short time as the directory stops sending it to your old host and starts routing it to Blizzard. We will wait for the Internet phone books to populate with the new Blizzard information and then we will change the settings on your computer to stop looking for email at your old host and start looking at Blizzard. No emails should be lost during the transition.

Requirements.

The Blizzard Hosting department requires a few key pieces of information in order to make all of this happen smoothly. We ask that you start looking for this information and provide it to your design project manager at the time you approve your interior page template. This will give us enough time to verify the information and look for any issues that may arise and delay the move.

  1. The domain names that you own.
  2. The User Names and Passwords to each domain name in the domain registers
  3. Email aliases to be set up (We need to know all of the email addresses that you would like at your domain along with who will recieve this email and how they will be checking the email.)
  4. A contact person that we can call on to configure your computer for email (We will talk them through the configuration if they require assistance.)
